Wow! What a great opportunity for our teachers, staff, and myself to serve the great community of Bivins. We are excited for the school year to start. You will see some new faces in the office. Mrs. Wingate is our new secretary and Ms. Barreras is our new attendance clerk. I have had the opportunity to meet some of you during registration. My name is Benny Barraza and I am the new principal at Bivins. I was raised in Borger, Texas and much of my amazing family still lives there. Why am I telling you this? Because Borger is the home of the Bulldogs...so I have a special place in my heart for the BULLDOGS! I am excited to be here and look forward to getting to know the students and parent here at Biivins.
It is important to stay in contact with the teacher. You may use the Wednesday folder, call on the phone, or have a conference as a way of staying in contact with the teacher. Spend some time each night with your child going over the school day, reviewing homework and reading with them. You may contact the teacher by calling 326-4100. You are also welcome to visit the classroom anytime by checking in at the main office.
Every Wednesday we will send home a folder that contains important papers. Some papers are to be signed and returned to school in the folder and some papers are to be kept by the parents. This is a great way to communicate about the academic progress, homework, test, field trips, activities, attendance, tardies, and behavior of each student. This will be the way we send home important information such as progress reports, report cards, lunch menus, sports sign up sheets, etc. This also is a great way to communicate back with the teachers. Feel free to send notes and/or request a conference through the folder.
We have a digital sign in front of the school on 15th Street. It will have important information and dates for activities displayed.
If you look on the Amarillo ISD website at www.amaisd.org you will see a lot of information pertaining to the district. On this site it has a school calendar, school closing information, student handbooks, cafeteria menus, job postings and a link to school web sites. On the Bivins web site there is information for parents that include the Parent Involvement Policy, Parental Information and Resource Center, supply list, monthly newsletter, activities, Parenting Institute, expectations and access to attendance and grades (must get password from office).
Another important way we can work together to create success in your child is good attendance. The state law requires that every student must be in attendance at least 90% of the school days. That means no more than 18 absences for the year. I realize that some students will get the chicken pox, measles, flu, etc. That is why it is very important that students be at school when they are not ill. If the student has a doctor’s appointment, please get a note from the doctor’s office and bring it to school when the student returns. If the student is going to be absent due to an illness, please contact the office at 326-4100.
It is just as important that the students arrive at school on time. The students are to be in their desks ready to learn by 7:55. If they arrive at school after 8:05, they are to report to the office to get a tardy pass. If the student is late they miss out on classroom teaching and it disturbs the class when they enter the room late.
Next, behavior is important. We will go over the rules and classroom procedures with the students to provide a safe and conducive learning environment. We are emphasizing positive behavior that will help students make good choices. We also are teaching the students to be responsible for their own actions and choices. We appreciate your support by helping us reinforce these traits.
Finally, the safety of the student is important to us. If there are situations that we need to be aware of that pertains to the safety of the students, please contact us immediately. We encourage you to visit the classroom and school. Please check into the office and get a visitor badge. Let me remind you to be cautious during drop off and pick up time. It is illegal to double park and creates an unsafe situation for many people.
This is a great school, with a fantastic staff, and a wonderful community! Together we can accomplish tremendous achievements for each child. If we can be of help to you, please contact us at 326-4100.
